Abraham Lincolns Assassination
· On April 14 1865 Abraham Lincoln went to see a comedy at Ford’s Theatre in Washington D.C. with his wife Mary Todd Lincoln, but in the middle of the 3rd act things went very wrong. John Wilkes Booth attacked Lincoln in his box seat shooting him in the back of the head. Jumping onto the stage he shouted "Sic semper tyrannis!" to the audience just before he ran out the back door of the theatre and riding away . Still in his box seat of the theatre Abraham Lincoln was unconscious due to his head injury. He was taken to a hospital but he never regained consciousness and died the very next day on April 15 1865. Lewis, a man helping John Wilkes Booth shot and very badly hurt the secretary of state. He soon was arrested after the shooting. Another man by the name of George Atzerodt who was supposed to kill the vice president was also arrested as well, but he never worked up the strength to actually shoot at the vice president. After the shooting there was a large manhunt of nearly 10,000 people. A military court case was made and it went from May 10th to June 20th. There were eight men accused of being John Wilkes Booth's accomplices. Two of the men had abandon Booth early on and were sent to life in prison. The others were sentenced to be hung by the neck until death.
